Israel: Day 4

Day 4 (March 11th): We drove along the eastern shore of the Sea Of Galilee along the Golan Heights towards northern Israel. On our way there looked for coneys laying out in the sun (Proverbs 30:26).. they looked a lot like beavers?

Our first stop was the Mount of Beatitudes where Jesus preached the “Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).  There is a Catholic chapel  on the traditional site (built by famous architect Antonio Barluzzi) and then our guide also pointed out the site of a natural amphitheater built into the side of the mountain where tradition also holds that Jesus could have preached (in the picture below, a banana grove is now growing in the amphitheater).

Next up was Dan, which was the northernmost city in Israel in the Old Testament.  Scripture refers to “from Dan to Beersheba” (Judges 20:1) when writers wanted to speak to the entire country.  Abraham traveled to DAn to rescue Lot (Genesis 14:13-16) and Dan was known as the place of idolatry after the first king of the northern kingdom set up golden calves to keep the people from going to Jerusalem to worship (1 King 12:26-33).

Dan was really quite pretty – and this is Lebanon in the distance.

Caesarea Philippi which is where Jesus asked his disciples “Who do men say that I am?” (Matthew 16:13-20).

We then headed to Capernaum which is where Jesus based his Galilean ministry.

The disciples were called here (Matthew 4:13)  and Jesus performed more miracles here than in any other city. A synagogue was excavated from the fourth century that is believed to stand on the site of the original synagogue in which Jesus preached & healed & performed several miracles.

There were also amazing views of the Sea of Galilee.

We ended the day by viewing a 1st century boat that was discovered in the Sea of Galilee (covered in mud which preserved the wood) during a drought.

And then we took a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee  from Capernaum to Tiberias on a reproduction fishing boat like the one that had been discovered.

After Day 4, Mr. G said with full confidence that Jesus was obviously a lake person!
